Highest NZ conviction rate in Invercargill courts
Information released by Statistics New Zealand shows that 81.7% of all prosecuted charges in District Courts and the High Court in Invercargill resulted in a conviction in 2011.
This was above the national average of 74.5% and the highest conviction rate for any New Zealand court cluster.
While the diversion rate (4.7%) for Invercargill was the same as the national average in 2011, the proportion of charges not proven was the lowest in New Zealand, at 13.6% - well below the national average of 20.5%.
The information also shows that prosecuted charges in Invercargill courts dropped by 9.9% from 2010 to 2011. This compares to a fall of 11.1% nationally.
