Review for Te Ture Whenua Maori Act
Associate Maori Affairs Minister Christopher Finlayson has announced that an expert panel will review Te Ture Whenua Maori Act 1993.
Mr Finlayson says the view will look at unlocking the economic potential of Maori land for its beneficiaries, while preserving its cultural significance for future generations.
The Act was last reviewed in 2002, but most of the recommendations made then were not implemented.
The expert review panel will be chaired by lawyer Matanuku Mahuika. The other members are lawyer Tokorangi Kapea, lawyer Patsy Reddy and Dion Tuuta.
The panel is required to identify issues and consult stakeholders in June and July, to assess options for the better utilisation of Maori land in August September, to consult on possible options for better utilisation in October November, and to submit a final report to the Associate Minister of Maori Affairs in December 2012.
