The Government has set about reforming the Public Works Act 1981. The reforms reflect a significant shift in New Zealand’s approach to land acquisition for public infrastructure, driven by the need for greater efficiency, effectiveness and clarity in the delivery of major projects.
There are two stages to the reform:
- Targeted amendments as to critical infrastructure – (the Public Works (critical infrastructure) Amendment Act 2025 commenced on 7 August 2025); and
- Broader amendments – the Public Works Amendment Bill had its first reading on 11 December 2025, and the second reading is set for May 2026.
This webinar will look at the targeted and broader amendments separately and then discuss their combined impact on modernising the public acquisition processes while maintaining protections for landowners.
